Uncharted Africa and Natural Selection Foundation step up for the community
The iconic Botswana safari companies help combat ongoing drug shortages with P200,000 (Botswana Pula) medicine donation

Gweta Primary Hospital – a medical facility in the community closest to the Makgadikgadi Pans camps, has been experiencing ongoing drug shortages, making it difficult for patients to access the medication they rely on. These deficits heavily affect the local communities, including the many individuals who work for Uncharted Africa, Natural Selection and their families.
The drug donation
Uncharted Africa and the Natural Selection Foundation made a donation of medicines including antibiotics, medication for high blood pressure, diabetes and other crucial drugs for these remote communities, worth P200,000..
The difference it makes
A handover was held at the end of July 2026, at which Uncharted Africa representative Phatsimo Khumalo explained that the donation is part of the company’s continued commitment to Gweta and its community.
The hospital’s Chief Medical Officer Dr Masalila added that prior to the donation the hospital’s stock of essential medicines had fallen to 49% but with the donation, was now closer to 85%. The hospital serves a wide area and medications such as these are in high demand.
Help in other areas
This isn’t the first time UA and the Natural Selection Foundation have stepped in to assist Gweta Primary Hospital in its hour of need. They previously donated solar panels worth P1,700,000 for the hospital’s main theatre, laboratory and pharmacy to ensure the hospital’s equipment could keep running during power outages.
In addition to these donations from Uncharted Africa and the Natural Selection Foundation, the hospital was also the recipient of an oxygen plant funded by the Global Fund and installed by Oagile Rammoi, making Gweta one of just four hospitals in the country to have such a facility.
Rich history and commitment
Uncharted Africa has been inextricably linked to Botswana and the Makgadikgadi Pans in particular since explorer Jack Bousfield fell in love with the area in the early sixties and his son Ralph went on to found Jack’s Camp in his memory.
For decades, the company has employed from the local communities, helped protect the land, and the customs and stories of its people, and will continue to treasure this special part of the world.
