Each year, more than 200 community members from Khwai Village enter Khwai Private Reserve for the threemonth grass-harvesting season. The grass provides an important source of income and is used to thatch homes, community buildings, schools and safari camps. With support from the Foundation and Khwai Private Reserve, harvesters receive safe accommodation, meals, and transport to help bring their grass to market. Rangers also work alongside participants to reduce their environmental footprint and protect wildlife. What began as livelihood support has developed into a long-term partnership that benefits both the community and the reserve.
