In some parts of Africa, giraffes may still appear plentiful, yet across the continent their numbers are quietly declining. In northwest Namibia, a uniquely desert-adapted population of Angolan giraffe survives in one of the harshest environments on Earth. Protecting these giraffes requires sustained research, local engagement and long-term monitoring.
Working in partnership with the Giraffe Conservation Foundation (GCF), Natural Selection supports efforts to better understand and safeguard this remarkable population. Based in Namibia and active across 12 African countries, GCF is the world’s leading authority on giraffe conservation and the only organisation dedicated exclusively to the conservation and management of giraffes in the wild.
Guests staying at Hoanib Valley Camp are able to learn about giraffe conservation directly from their guides while observing these animals in an extreme desert environment. By experiencing giraffes in this context, guests become part of a wider awareness effort—carrying the story of giraffe conservation beyond Namibia’s borders.
Through extensive field research and collaboration with governments, NGOs and universities, GCF has reshaped global understanding of giraffe biology. Their work identified four distinct giraffe species, rather than a single species as previously believed, elevating the conservation urgency for several populations now classified as Endangered or Critically Endangered.
In northwest Namibia, the desert-dwelling Angolan giraffe population has increased over recent decades as a result of coordinated conservation by local communities, the Namibian government, private tourism operators and conservation organisations, including GCF. Despite this progress, environmental pressures remain, and continued monitoring is essential to understand changing conditions and guide effective conservation management.
By supporting long-term research, awareness and on-the-ground monitoring, this project helps ensure that desert-dwelling giraffes remain part of Namibia’s arid landscapes and stay protected long into the future.
